NisidaNisida is a 52 foot ULDB (Ultra Light Displacement Boat), based on
a design by Bill Lee, the Californian best known for the Santa Cruz range of yachts.
She is designed to be a fast, easily handled and seaworthy boat. Construction
is glass and Kevlar on a foam core, giving a very light and strong hull, so the
displacement is kept down to 10.5 tons. The keel is made of steel with a lead
bulb weighing in at 3.8 tons. The rig stands over 20 metres from the sea level.
With a mainsail of 82 sq. metres, a genoa of 66 sq. metres and a spinnaker of
over 200 sq. metres, there is plenty of power, enabling Nisida to attain speeds
of over 15 knots on a suitable point of sailing. She is easy to reef and reduce
sail area, with a detachable inner forestay to take the storm jib for when the
going gets a bit rougher.
